North County has its own photography identity — softer, surfier, and less crowded than the city beaches, with a couple of locations that exist nowhere else in the county. If you're in Encinitas, Carlsbad, Leucadia, or anywhere along the 101, these are the spots I book sessions at — and it means your photographer isn't charging you drive time to "go somewhere good." Moonlight Beach: the family workhorse
Encinitas' main beach earns its role: wide sand, gentle slope, easy access ramps, and volleyball-and-firepit energy that keeps candid sessions natural. The bluffs on either side give you elevated angles the flat city beaches can't, and the west-facing sunset light is as good as anywhere in the county. For families with small kids, the short walk from parking to sand matters more than people think.
Swami's & the 101 overlooks
The blufftop park above Swami's — with the gold lotus domes of the Self-Realization Fellowship over your shoulder — is the most Encinitas frame that exists. Surfers threading down the stairs, longboards under arms, the point breaking below. I shoot the overlook and stairway rather than the narrow beach itself; that's where the character is. Sunset from this bluff, looking down the coastline, is one of North County's signature landscape shots.
Ponto & South Carlsbad: the empty-beach look
When a session needs clean, minimal, nobody-in-the-background frames — apparel and brand work especially — Ponto Beach at the Carlsbad border is my pick. Long straight sand, low dunes and grasses for foreground texture, and consistently thinner crowds than anything south of it. The State Beach campground bluffs above give you a second angle without moving the car.
Carlsbad Village & the seawall
Carlsbad's walkable village — the sign at Carlsbad Blvd, the flower-basket storefronts, Tamarack's seawall walk — photographs like a small beach town from another decade. The seawall at golden hour gives you that long, curving leading line with the sun dropping over the water, and the village streets add an in-town look to round out a beach session.
The Flower Fields: fifty acres, eight weeks
The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are the one San Diego location with a hard season: roughly March through early May, fifty acres of ranunculus stripes on a hillside over the ocean. Nothing else in the county looks remotely like it. It's a ticketed, privately run attraction — entry is paid, hours are set, and professional sessions have their own rules and fees, so check the Flower Fields' current photography policy and book early. Timing and the marine layer
Standard west-facing rules — last 60–90 minutes before sunset — with one North County caveat: May and June marine layer sits harder and later up here than in the city.
