Crystal Pier: the frame everyone recognizes
Crystal Pier at the foot of Garnet Avenue is the anchor shot — the white cottages with blue roofs stretching over the water. Shoot from the sand on the north side in the afternoon and the pier's shadow line gives you clean leading lines; at golden hour the cottages catch warm side-light. The pier deck itself is open to the public during posted hours, and the view back toward the beach from mid-pier is an underused angle. One block over, the Pacific Beach boardwalk mural walls add a color-pop option most sessions miss.
The boardwalk: motion is the point
The Ocean Front Walk between PB and Mission Beach is constant motion — cruisers, skaters, runners — and instead of fighting it, use it: slow-shutter panning shots, candid walking frames, a couple holding hands with blurred bikes streaming past. For clean frames without the chaos, early weekday mornings are shockingly quiet, and the low sun down the length of the boardwalk is some of the best light of the day.
Belmont Park & the Giant Dipper
The 1925 wooden roller coaster is San Diego's best retro backdrop — white lattice and red track that reads instantly nostalgic. You can frame it from the public boardwalk and beach without entering the park. Evening sessions get a bonus: the coaster's lights come on against the dusk sky.
The bayside secret
Walk two blocks east from the ocean anywhere in Mission Beach and you hit Bayside Walk — calm water, moored sailboats, palm silhouettes, and none of the ocean-side crowds. When the ocean sunset is done, the bay holds soft pastel light for another twenty minutes, and the still water doubles every color. It's my standard closing location for family sessions: kids are tired, the bay is quiet, and the light is gentle.
Timing and season
West-facing beach rules apply: the last 60–90 minutes before sunset for warm light on faces, then the bayside for the afterglow. Summer brings the crowds — and the marine layer in May and June can gray out mornings entirely. September and October are the locals' secret: warm water, golden light, and half the people. Parking, realistically
This is the hardest part of any MB/PB session. Summer weekends, the lots at Belmont Park and the foot of Grand Ave fill by mid-morning and stay full past sunset. My playbook: meet on the bayside streets (Bayside Lane area) where residential parking turns over, or start from the north PB end near Law Street where it's consistently easier. Build fifteen minutes of buffer into any summer session — I schedule it in so nobody starts stressed.
