Webflow vs Squarespace vs Wix vs Shopify — from someone who builds on all four.

No affiliate links, no fan-page energy. Kanyon Studio ships client sites on Webflow, Squarespace, Wix and Shopify, so this comparison covers what actually matters: real monthly cost, design control, how far each platform can rank in Google and AI search, and which one fits your business.

The short version

Four platforms, four different jobs.

Webflow

Best overall for service businesses & brands

Total design control, the cleanest code of the four, and the highest SEO and AI-search ceiling — full schema, llms.txt, semantic markup. Hosting runs about $14–$39/mo. The catch: the learning curve is real, so most owners have it built for them and then edit content themselves.

Squarespace

Best for portfolios & easy self-editing

The best-looking templates out of the box and the easiest editor to live with day to day. The trade: you work inside the template's rails, and the technical SEO ceiling is the lowest of the four. Plans run about $16–$23/mo.

Wix

Best for fast, cheap launches

The fastest zero-to-live of the four and genuinely fine for a one-page service site. It gets messy as pages stack up, and leaving Wix later is the hardest migration on this list. Plans run about $17–$36/mo.

Shopify

Best for real ecommerce

Selling 10+ SKUs, subscriptions, or through Instagram and TikTok Shop? This isn't a debate — checkout, inventory and taxes are solved problems on Shopify. Content and blogging are its weak side. From about $39/mo plus apps.

Head to head

Webflow vs Squarespace: the small-business decision.

This is the closest matchup of the bunch, because both are aimed at the same buyer — a small business or creative that wants a beautiful site without a big agency bill. Squarespace wins the first afternoon: pick a template, drop in photos, live by dinner. Webflow wins every month after that: nothing is locked to a template, so the design, the markup and the page speed are exactly what your business needs them to be.

The gap shows up when ranking matters. Squarespace covers SEO basics well, but you can't go much deeper than the basics. On Webflow I can ship full JSON-LD schema, an llms.txt file, semantic HTML and fast Core Web Vitals — the exact things Google and AI search engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity reward. That's the ceiling difference you're really choosing between.

My call: self-building a portfolio or restaurant site? Squarespace, honestly. If search traffic is how the site pays for itself, Webflow — it's what I build most client sites on.

Head to head

Webflow vs Wix: launch speed vs long game.

Wix is the fastest way on this list to get a real website live, and for a one-page service site on a tight timeline it's a legitimate pick — I've built them. The drag-anywhere editor that makes it fast is also what hurts it later: past five or six pages the underlying code gets messy, redesigns get painful, and the structured data Google and AI engines read is limited compared to what Webflow allows.

The other thing nobody mentions until it's too late: Wix is the hardest platform of the four to leave. There's no clean export, so a future move to Webflow or Shopify is a rebuild. If there's any chance this site becomes your main growth channel, that lock-in belongs in the math. Migrations that preserve rankings are a regular part of my web design work — URL structure kept, 301s for anything retired.

My call: Wix if you need to be live this week and the site is a digital business card. Webflow if the site should still be your best salesperson three years from now.

Head to head

Webflow vs Shopify: count your SKUs.

These two aren't really competitors — Webflow is a design and content platform with light ecommerce, Shopify is a commerce engine with light content. The decision rule I give clients is simple: under about ten products, Webflow Ecommerce keeps everything in one clean, fully-designed site. Past ten SKUs — or the moment you want subscriptions, multi-channel selling, or serious inventory — Shopify stops being optional.

The best answer for a lot of product brands is both: a Webflow marketing site that ranks and tells the brand story, with Shopify handling the catalog and checkout underneath. That hybrid is a build I do regularly, and it's why my pricing page quotes ecommerce projects by scope instead of one flat number.

My call: 10+ SKUs or subscriptions → Shopify. Services, portfolio, content → Webflow. Big catalog and a content-heavy brand → run both, each doing what it's best at.

Platform FAQ

The questions everyone asks.

Which is cheaper, Webflow or Squarespace?
On the monthly plan alone, Squarespace by a little — roughly $16–$23/mo against Webflow's $14–$39/mo hosting, depending on tier. But total cost is build plus plan: a template you configure yourself is cheapest on either platform, and a professionally built site costs about the same on both. The real difference you're paying for is the ceiling — how far the site can rank and grow — not the $5/mo gap.
Is Webflow better than Wix for SEO?
Yes, structurally. Webflow outputs clean semantic markup, supports full JSON-LD schema and llms.txt, and consistently posts faster Core Web Vitals. Wix's SEO tooling has improved a lot, but the drag-anywhere editor produces heavier code and its structured-data options are more limited. A well-built Wix site beats a badly built Webflow site — but at equal effort, Webflow's ceiling is higher.
Should I use Shopify or Webflow for an online store?
Count your SKUs. Under about ten products, Webflow Ecommerce keeps design, content and checkout in one place. Ten or more — or subscriptions, multi-channel selling, serious inventory — use Shopify. Content-heavy product brands often run both: a Webflow marketing site that ranks, with Shopify powering the catalog and checkout.
Can I switch platforms later without losing my Google rankings?
Yes, if the migration is done carefully: keep the URL structure where possible, 301-redirect anything that moves, and rebuild the schema on the new platform. Rankings survive when Google can follow the trail. Wix is the hardest platform to migrate away from (no clean export); Squarespace and WordPress moves are routine. Migration projects are a regular part of my web design work.
Which platform is best for showing up in ChatGPT and AI search?
Webflow has the highest ceiling, because AI engines reward exactly what it allows: full JSON-LD schema, an llms.txt file at the root, FAQ blocks with answer-first copy, and clean semantic HTML. You can improve AI visibility on any of the four — I do AEO work on all of them — but Webflow is the only one where nothing is off-limits.
Do you actually build on all four platforms?
Yes — Webflow is the default for service businesses and brands, Shopify for product catalogs, Wix for fast one-page launches, Squarespace for portfolio-driven brands that want easy in-house editing.
